Incorporated in the year 1897 as a Public Limited Company, Century Textiles and Industries Limited had only one industrial unit - Cotton Textile Mills till 1951. Since then the company has made rapid progress in widely diverse fields. At present, the company is a trendsetter in cotton textiles and also has a remarkable presence in the real estate, cement and pulp and paper Industries.
The company added to its fold a state-of-the-art, vertically integrated plant, Birla Century set up at Jhagadia, Bharuch, Gujarat, with an investment of about US$ 180 million (INR 850 Crore) in 2009. This is a fully composite textile plant from blow room to made-ups, stretching over an area of 43.56 Million Sq. Ft. (100 Acres) with an abundant supply of water. Birla Century uses the best modern machinery to produce a wide range of premium textiles — from suiting and shirting to finer fabrics and household linen. Innovative finishes such as wrinkle-free, easy-care, and anti-bacterial are imparted to fabrics through world-class automated processing with eco-friendly and non-toxic dyes and chemicals.
The Century Pulp and Paper (CPP), established in 1984 at Lalkua, near Nainital (Uttarakhand) in the state of Uttarakhand, is a producer of excellent quality writing and printing paper, and a leading manufacturer of tissue and board, as well as Rayon Grade Pulp (RGP) products. Its second paper unit, based on bagasse manufacturing, is adjacent to the existing pulp and paper plant at Lalkua. It was established in 1995. The company also has a prime-grade tissue paper plant at Lalkua. It has recently opened a new sheet cutting facility at Sonipat and started the commercial production with present capacity of 1000 Mt per month. This is the third of its kind by the company, the other two are at Bharuch (Gujarat) & Baddi (Himachal Pradesh).
The company forayed into real estate sector with Birla Estates in 2016, with an aim to deliver exceptional residential and commercial spaces. The company will be developing many land parcels that it holds as well as look at joint development/strategic tie-ups across top cities. The two commercial properties built by the company at Worli (Mumbai), Birla Aurora and Birla Centurion, both platinum certified buildings, have attained an iconic status in the commercial property fraternity.
The Cement business of the Company having a total cement manufacturing capacity of 14.6 million tonnes per annuam (mtpa) consists of three integrated cement Units, one each, in the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra with a total capacity of 12.6 mtpa and a Grinding Unit in West Bengal of 2.0 mtpa. Century Cement was established as the first Cement Unit in 1974 at Baikunth (Tilda), Raipur, in the state of Chhattisgarh after which the rest of the Units were established. Recently the Board of Directors and subsequently the shareholders of the Company have approved demerger of cement business of the Company into UltraTech Cement Ltd. through a scheme of demerger filed with National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). After receipt of all the approvals the cement business of the Company will be merged with UltraTech Cement Ltd.
The company has a viscose yarn factory, Century Rayon, which manufactures viscose yarn, installed in 1954 in Shahad, Kalyan, at a distance of 56 Km from Mumbai. In 1956, the factory commenced production. In addition to the viscose based products, in due course the company went in for backward integration and established plants for the production of various industrial chemicals. In terms of an agreement signed between the Board of Directors of Century Textiles and Industries Limited (A flagship company of Mr. B.K. Birla Group) and Grasim Industries Limited (one of the flagship Companies of Aditya Birla Group), the management and operation of Century Rayon has been given to Grasim Industries Limited for a period of 15 years beginning from 1st February 2018. By virtue of this agreement Century Rayon, is now under the Management and Operation of Grasim Industries Limited belonging to Aditya Birla Group (ABG).
The company is managed by a Board of Directors comprising eminent industrialists, businessmen and dedicated professionals. The Chairman of the Board is Mr. B.K. Birla.
